In order to recover successfully from depression, you need to take control of your mindset, which takes a great deal of willpower and discipline. You must be willing to commit and follow through if you want to succeed. It’s all about having a Growth Mindset.
The Growth Mindset
Many successful people out there today would not be where they are if they did not have the right mindset. Therefore, it is time to learn how to train the mind to live with a growth mindset.
If you are not prepared to train the mind, you are most likely to give up on things when they get difficult. At the other end of the spectrum, you will continue on endlessly until what you are doing is perfect. Either way you limit yourself from moving forward. Once you train your mind with the right mindset, you will be able to resist the temptation to think negatively and become depressed when things do not go the way you want them to in your life.
The Importance of Living with the Right Mindset
Just as you must train the muscles of your body to get stronger, you must also train the mind to develop mental strength and determination. This process will takes time, but it can be done. After all, building your mental muscles is just as important as building your physical muscles.
In order to learn to train the mind to live with a growth mindset and overcome depression, you must focus on the fact that you are constantly learning and developing as a human being and not allow negative thoughts to take over when they pop into your head.
Training Your Mind
Imagine your alarm clock goes off at 5am and it is time to get ready for work. You look out the window and realize it is going to be a cold and rainy day. Immediately, you want to climb back into bed, thinking:
- It is too cold to go to work
- If I get out of bed today I will just feel worse
- I do not feel like getting wet today
Instead, you can train the mind to look at the positive things you will get out of going to work even if it is cold and wet in order to get your day started off right and help get you out of a depressed mood.
Your mindset determines the path that you take and how you view what’s going on around you. If you develop a strong growth mindset, you will understand that negative thoughts are generally not based on fact but rather a creation of possibilities, that it is- what might happen.
Everyone has the blues at one time or another, but getting up and taking action is the best way to feel better when you are depressed. The strongest motivation comes from within and it is possible to train the brain to think creatively and constructively.
How to Train the Mind
If you have a goal to train the mind to live with a growth mindset, then persist until you succeed. Set attainable, but challenging goals and commit mentally to achieving your goals no matter what you have to do or how hard you have to work at it.
Many people find that daily positive affirmations help them to stick with their goals and maintain a growth mindset.
Personally, I have found that writing down an intention for the day in the morning and asking myself how many ways can I achieve this intention, a great way to help develop focus and train my brain.
Challenge your negative thoughts by asking yourself what evidence you have for this thought. Remind yourself of all of the accomplishments that you have made and understand that you will make many more throughout the remainder of your life.
